Sacred Textures
An ode to the tactile soul of nature. From the rare softness of alpaca and Himalayan wools to the luminous threads of silk, Mohair and the natural fibres, each material is selected for its intrinsic purity and presence. Ancient weaving techniques and refined finishes transform these noble fibres into sacred surfaces, textures that resonate with quiet strength and timeless beauty.
Each Natìara rug is the result of patient mastery, handcrafted by Indian artisans who have refined their techniques over decades, guided by a deep understanding of fibre, gesture, and form. By nurturing long-standing relationships with our craftspeople and suppliers, we honour their artistry and ensure that every creation upholds the values of excellence and respect.
Once a yarn is selected, it becomes a medium of endless possibility. Twisted, knotted, looped, or woven, each gesture gives rise to a distinct tactile language: from tightly structured weaves to generous, expressive piles. While the intricacies of these techniques belong to a deeper textile tradition, what follows is a glimpse into their essential forms where texture becomes expression, and craftsmanship, a sacred art.

Its character lies in its authenticity: a fibre shaped by altitude, silence, and time. -
Afghan Wool
Harvested from hardy flocks in the remote highlands of Afghanistan, Afghan wool is a testament to resilience and heritage. Its fibers are thick, warm, and richly textured, offering a natural matte softness that deepens with time. This wool carries the spirit of ancient nomadic traditions, lending each piece a profound sense of history and enduring strength — a material crafted by nature and culture in perfect harmony. -
Iranian Wool
Sourced from ancient flocks roaming the rugged landscapes of Iran, this wool carries a heritage steeped in tradition and artisanal mastery. Harvested by hand from the undercoat of mountain goats, it brings an incomparable warmth and silk-like fluidity to textiles. In rugs, it becomes an intimate gesture, a subtle softness underfoot reserved for those who seek quiet refinement and tactile purity in every detail.
Silks: A Whisper of Sophistication
-
Pure Silk
Pure silk, also known as natural silk, is produced from the cocoons of silkworms. It is prized for its unparalleled softness, natural sheen, and delicate yet strong fibres. In rugs, pure silk offers a luminous glow and a smooth, luxurious texture that ages beautifully over time, enhancing the design with subtle iridescence and tactile elegance. -
Art Silk
Art silk, or artificial silk, is a man-made fibre designed to mimic the appearance and feel of natural silk. While it can offer a similar sheen and softness at a more accessible price point, art silk lacks the same durability and natural luster of pure silk. In rugs, art silk provides an attractive alternative but does not develop the same depth or patina with use. -
Tencel™ Silk
Tencel™ Silk is a premium fibre made from sustainably sourced wood pulp, transformed through an eco-friendly process into a soft, breathable, and silky material. Known for its smooth texture and excellent moisture management, Tencel™ Silk offers a natural sheen similar to traditional silk but with enhanced durability and ease of care. It represents a modern, responsible choice for luxurious textiles. -
Lenzing™ Silk
Lenzing™ Silk, produced by the Lenzing Group, refers to fibres derived from natural cellulose (often from eucalyptus or beech trees) manufactured using advanced, environmentally conscious methods. This fibre combines the softness and sheen of silk with high strength and eco-friendly credentials. Lenzing™ Silk is appreciated for its refined texture, sustainability, and versatility in high-end design applications.

Rooted in tradition and crafted by nature, sisal lends a grounded, authentic presence to every piece.
Techniques
Each Natìara piece is the result of time-honoured craftsmanship and thoughtful innovation. We embrace a curated selection of artisanal techniques. From the structural purity of hand-woven flat weave, to the intricate precision of hand-knotting, and the expressive softness of hand-tufting. Finishes such as loop & cut or full cut add sculptural dimension and subtle rhythm. These methods are not just processes, but gestures of intention where material and mastery meet in quiet harmony.
-
Hand-Knotted
Each rug is meticulously crafted by tying individual knots onto a loom, resulting in a dense and durable weave that can take months to complete. This labor-intensive process produces rugs of exceptional quality and longevity, often considered heirloom pieces.
Depending on the design, we work with knot densities ranging from:
- 100–200 knots/in² – A balanced density that offers both clarity and character. Patterns appear more defined, while still retaining a sense of tactile depth. This is the most versatile range, where structure and softness coexist beautifully.- 200+ knots/in² – High-density weaving for refined, intricate detailing. This level of craftsmanship enables complex motifs, subtle gradients, and a delicate surface finish — where the design becomes almost painterly. Reserved for our most elaborate and time-intensive creations.
-
Hand-Tufted
Utilizing a tufting tool, artisans punch strands of yarn into a canvas backing, allowing for quicker production while still maintaining a handcrafted feel. While less time-consuming than hand-knotting, this method offers versatility in design and texture.
In our hand-tufted creations, we offer varying tuft densities to suit different aesthetic and functional preferences:
-35/40 knots balances softness with structure, suitable for both residential and light commercial spaces.
-50 knots offers enhanced durability and a more defined surface, perfect for high-traffic areas.
-60 knots delivers a dense and luxurious feel, showcasing intricate designs with clarity. Each technique reflects our commitment to craftsmanship, offering unique textures and qualities that cater to diverse aesthetic preferences and functional needs.

Hand Woven
Yarns are interlaced by hand on a loom without knots. This ancient and straightforward technique is ideal for flat weave rugs, featuring clean textures and minimalist designs. It produces lightweight rugs with a refined simplicity but less structural density compared to other methods. -
Hand Knitting
Yarn is manually worked with needles or knitting tools, similar to traditional knitting. The resulting texture is soft, voluminous, and enveloping, ideal for sculptural rugs, cushions, or statement pieces with a strong tactile presence. Less suited for high-traffic areas. -
Loom Knotted - All Cut
Loom knotted all cut is a technique where the fabric is knotted on a loom and then fully cut across the surface. The result is a defined structure with a smooth, velvety texture, free of loops or bouclé sections. This approach combines precision and softness, offering a refined and sensorial appearance. -
Loom-Knotted - All Loop
Loom knotted all loop is a technique where the fabric is knotted on a loom and left uncut on the surface. The result is a textured finish with visible loops that create a tactile, dimensional effect. This method emphasizes structure and rhythm, offering a more organic and dynamic appearance. -
Loom Knotted - Loop and cut
Loom knotted loop and cut is a technique where the fabric is knotted on a loom, combining both cut and uncut (looped) sections on the surface. The result is a rich, tactile texture with contrasting heights and finishes. This method creates depth and movement, enhancing the visual and sensory experience. -
Hand Woven Loop Cut
A hybrid hand-weaving technique where loops of yarn are selectively cut by hand to create contrasting textures within the same rug. This method offers a dynamic interplay of raised loops and cut pile, adding depth and sculptural interest to minimalist or patterned designs. -
Flat Weave
A classic weaving method with no pile, where yarns are woven tightly together on a loom to produce a smooth, flat surface. Known for its lightweight, reversible, and durable qualities, flat weave rugs showcase clean, graphic designs with understated elegance. -
Raised Pile
A technique that accentuates specific areas of the rug by raising the pile height, creating a subtle, tactile contrast. This dimensional effect enhances the visual depth and invites touch, adding a sculptural quality to the design without compromising softness. -
Carving
An artisanal finishing process where sections of the pile are carefully sheared or cut to sculpt intricate patterns and motifs. Carving adds definition and elegance, transforming the rug surface into a three-dimensional canvas of light and shadow, perfect for highlighting details with refined precision.
